The Center for the Women of New York continued its empowering work at the World of Working Women conference.
The conference, in its 25th year, was held at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel on Friday, October 26 with roughly 100 women in attendance.
“Thinking outside of the box for women, that’s what it’s all about,” said Allison Mastropieri, a center employee. “We try to open women up to new ideas.”
About 30 exhibitors came from different organizations citywide to take questions and give information to attendees. Businesses and organizations such as Ameriprise, Con Edison, Delta New York, the Department of Labor and Queens Library were among the many represented.
A panel also spoke about women’s place in the work force and about non-traditional jobs for women.
“There are different career paths, not just what you would associate women with,” said Mastropieri.
The panel, moderated by TimesLedger Newspapers editor Roz Liston, included notable community figures such as Assemblymember Ed Braunstein, Queens Courier publisher Victoria Schneps, attorney Ann-Margaret Carrozza, Carol Conslato of Con Edison, and attorney Amber Trizinsky of Outten & Golden law firm.
Following the panel, several workshops were held, including “The Resume: your one-shot opportunity to make an impression.”
Charles Gilmore of the Queens Library headed the resume workshop, and enjoyed coming out to work with attendees and answering their many questions.
“The resume is the first impression people get,” said Gilmore. “An impressive resume can crack the glass ceiling.”
Several other helpful workshops took place, including “Planning for Your Financial Security” and “Getting Back Into the Workforce,” which Mastropieri said women sometimes have a difficult time with.
“There’s a lot of competition out there today,” said Gilmore. “You have to stand out.”
