Catholics across Queens, Brooklyn and around the world celebrated the election of Pope Francis I on Wednesday, Mar. 13. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio and previously a cardinal from Argentina, Francis I- elected by the College of Cardinals on the fifth ballot in the Vatican conclave-is the first pope ever to emanate from the New World. He succeeds Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who resigned on Feb. 28.
