Thousands of people laced up their walking shoes in order to raise funds to help patients fight breast cancer during the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park on Sunday morning

Air Force Airman Alexies Mercado graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Tex. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Mercado is the daughter of Olga Vargas of Madison Street in Ridgewood and Alex Mercado of Custer Avenue in Jersey City, N.J. She is a 2008 graduate of Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood.
