Pet Owners Urged To Scoop Up Poop
City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined students from P.S. 150, local residents, civic leaders and members of the Sunnyside United Dog Society (SUDS) last Wednesday, Apr. 17, to officially kick-off his district-wide “Curb Your Dog” Public Awareness Campaign.

In an effort to jump-start the campaign, Van Bramer announced second grader Sophia Aguirre as the winner of his “Curb Your Dog” poster contest. The student’s art work encourages dog owners adhere to New York State Public Health Law 1310 and clean up after their pets.
The poster contest was integrated into the elementary school’s social studies curriculum in an effort to get the neighborhood children active in public service.
Over 600 people voted for their favorite poster via Van Bramer’s website, Facebook pages and the Sunnyside Post blog. The poster contest was developed after students of P.S. 150 reached out to Van Bramer’s office for assistance in tackling an abundant amount of dog waste in their neighborhoods.
The posters are currently being distributed to local businesses, civic groups, community centers, public spaces and dog runs in Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside and Maspeth.
Dog owners, who wish to participate in the campaign for cleaner streets, are welcome to visit Van Bramer’s district office (47-01 Queens Blvd., Suite 205, Sunnyside) to receive free disposable bio-degradable “dog poop bags,” donated by Wespaw Pets in Sunnyside.
