Cops searching for Sunnyside arson suspect

Police are looking for a suspect who allegedly set an ex-councilmember’s car on fire in Sunnyside.

The SUV, a 2007 Mercury Mariner, was discovered on fire near 49th Street and 39th Avenue around 5 a.m. on Sunday, said authorities. Several trash fires were also found within about a block of the car blaze.

The vehicle belonged to former Councilmember Eric Gioia, according to published reports. Police said there was “no specific evidence” that Goia’s vehicle was a target.

There were no injuries reported, said cops.
