Man smuggled cocaine into JFK in custard: U.S. Customs

JAMAICA — Authorities at John F. Kennedy International Airport arrested a man from Guyana last month after allegedly discovering nearly 18 pounds of cocaine hidden in an item inside his suitcase, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office said.

Godfrey Cassius was stopped April 22 after arriving at JFK when CBP officers noticed eight packages of powdered custard in his luggage emitted a strong chemical odor when probed, authorities said.

The CBP office said the substance allegedly tested positive for nearly $300,000 worth of cocaine and Cassius was taken into custody by customs agents.

The drugs were turned over to the Homeland Security Investigations department and Cassius is now facing federal charges for smuggling narcotics, authorities said.
