Street Sucker Punch Led to Woodside Man’s Death

Cops Continue Search For Killer

Law enforcement agents are seeking the assailant who sucker punched and fatally injured a pedestrian in Woodside early last Sunday morning, June 21, according to police.

The victim, 56-year-old Roberto Martires of 72nd Street in Woodside, died Tuesday, June 24, from his injuries while undergoing treatment at Elmhurst Hospital Center. Police are now investigating the case as a homicide.

Authorities described the perpetrator as a Hispanic male in his early to mid 20s with facial hair, who was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans and a dark-colored baseball cap.

Reportedly, the attack occurred at 12:10 a.m. last Saturday in front of a location on Roosevelt Avenue near 69th Street.

According to police, Martires was walking along Roosevelt Avenue when the culprit approached and punched him in the face.

Sources familiar with the investigation said the victim fell to the ground, causing his head to strike the pavement.

Following the assault, the suspect reportedly fled in an unknown direction.

Officers from the 108th Precinct responded to the scene along with EMS units which rushed Martires to Elmhurst Hospital. Authorities said he suffered head trauma and hemorrhaging to the brain.

The 108th Precinct Detective Squad is conducting the ongoing investigation, police said.
