Parents and pols rally in support of students and IS 59

By Juan Soto

Dozens of parents, neighbors and elected officials rallied Monday morning at IS 59 in Springfield Gardens to show their support for the children, the school and their education.

U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-Jamaica) led the rally and said the main intention of it was “to let students know that we stand in support of their pursuit of an education.”

Meeks, along with Our Brothers Guardian Mentoring Program, a local nonprofit, “adopted” IS 59 two years ago to prove that communities and their organizations “have the capacity to help revitalize local schools.”

The early morning rally took place as kids from the school were entering the building to get to their classrooms.

“This school and schools like it, and this community and communities like it, must help the schools in our midst provide our young people with the academic foundation,” said Meeks.

Other elected officials at the rally included City Councilmen I. Daneek Miller (D-St. Albans) and Donovan Richards (D-Laurelton), as well as state Assemblyman William Scarborough (D-Jamaica).
