Nearly a year after U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing) introduced a bill to create a zip code for Glendale, efforts to get the new postal designation have stalled.
In October, Meng introduced a bill that would direct the United States Postal Service to designate a single, unique zip code for the area that encompasses Glendale. Glendale currently shares the 11385 zip code with the neighboring Ridgewood.
Meng said the bill is currently in the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the panel with jurisdiction over the Postal Service.
The delay may have to do with the bill being part of a larger package of postal service reforms, she said.
“They might be trying to figure out other things as well,” she said.
At the time, Meng had hailed the bill as a way to honor Glendale’s identity.
“Most areas in the borough are recognized by their neighborhood names, which provide a sense of identity and pride for local residents,” she said. “That is true for Glendale, and it’s time for the Postal Service to accept and recognize that by creating a zip code that the community can finally call its own.”
