Northeast Queens voters are heading to the polls today to choose the candidate who will occupy the vacant City Council seat formerly occupied by Mark Weprin.
Democrat Barry Grodenchik and Republican Joe Concannon are seeking the open 23rd Council District seat, which covers all or parts of Bayside Hills, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Fresh Meadows, Glen Oaks, Hollis, Little Neck, New Hyde Park, Oakland Gardens and Queens Village. In recent weeks, the two candidates have slugged it out at debates held throughout the district, including one on Oct. 22 sponsored by The Queens Courier and North Shore Towers.
Weprin resigned from the seat in June to become Governor Andrew Cuomo’s deputy secretary of legislative affairs.
Beyond that race, there doesn’t figure to be that much political drama this Election Day in Queens County.
Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown is running unopposed on the Democrat, Republican and Conservative party lines, virtually assuring re-election to his seventh term in office.
Democrat Alicia Hyndman is a big favorite to defeat Republican Scherie Murray in the race for the vacant 29th Assembly District seat formerly held by William Scarborough. The district covers much of Cambria Heights, Jamaica, Laurelton, Rosedale, St. Albans and Springfield Gardens.
Several judicial seats are also on the ballot. One race of note is that for the 3rd Municipal Civil Court District, in which former City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. — running on the Democrat, Republican and Conservative lines — faces no opposition in his bid for the seat.
