Candace Prince, a coordinator for the polling place at Springfield Gardens Educational Complex, said she had been hesitant to take a moment’s rest ever since the early-morning rush.
“Everytime I look up, there’s a new wave of people coming in,” she said.
Turnout seemed steady but manageable in the school’s gymnasium, where private stations lined the walls for people to fill out their ballots. Prince said turnout was comparable to past presidential elections.
“A lot of folks haven’t voted since 2008,” she said, citing voters’ unfamiliarity with the scanning systems in place for the last two presidential elections.
She said one scanner had jammed early, but the problem was quickly resolved and it had been smooth sailing since. Still, coordinator Beverly Johnson knew what was coming at the end of the workday.
“We’re just bracing ourselves for after 6 p.m.,” she said.
