A College Point-based manufacturing company is growing and creating new jobs for residents.

Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development Alicia Glen and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) President and CEO James Patchett toured S&L Aerospace Metals, LLC (S&L) in College Point last week as part of “City Hall in Your Borough.”

The premier hydraulic aircraft manufacturing company 120-12 28th Ave., which assembles metal parts, landing gear and hydraulic assemblies for U.S. Armed Forces and commercial aerospace companies, recently begun an expansion that will create 20 more jobs, according to NYCEDC.

Facilitated by the city selling two adjacent lots to S&L, the company, which already employs 84 people full time, has already renovated an acquired existing building. The next phase, anticipated to begin shortly, will involve the construction of an additional brand-new building.

In total, the expansion will deliver approximately 34,000 square feet of new manufacturing space.

“S&L Aerospace was founded in New York City in 1947, and it’s our goal to make sure it continues to grow in New York City,” said S&L Aerospace Metals President Jerry Wang and Executive Vice President Ted Varvatsas. “We’re proud of our unparalleled reputation and expanding our facility will allow us to keep being one of America’s most reliable aerospace manufacturers.”

According to NYCEDC, a significant majority of the company’s employees are foreign born, do not have advanced degrees and live within a 10-mile radius of the company.

The company’s clientele includes Boeing, Raytheon, Helicopter Support, Airbus and the United States Government.

“This is the definition of advanced manufacturing: precision parts for Black Hawk helicopters and commercial aviation, made by hands and machines right here in Queens,” Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen said. “This sector has a bright future in New York City, and we’re investing so that home-grown firms like S&L Aerospace Metals can keep adding good-paying jobs.”

Local representative Councilman Paul Vallone welcomed news of the expansion.

“S&L Aerospace Metals is a great company that has provided steady, good-paying jobs for my constituents in College Point for years,” Vallone said. “Their expansion and creation of 20 new jobs is a welcome addition to this community.”
