Maspeth’s art and event space, the Knockdown Center, is holding an open call looking for short-term projects including temporary installations, dance or theater performances, readings, talks, screenings, and more for their 2017-2018 programming.
Knockdown Center invites artists to submit their proposals to be part of the center’s programming lineup.
“Knockdown Center’s mission is to be responsive to the needs of cultural producers making experimental and cross-disciplinary work, and to provide a platform for in-depth inquiry from varying viewpoints across diverse formats,” Knockdown Center wrote on the open call’s submission guidelines. “Through an open proposal process, we offer artists, curators, and organizers the freedom to challenge traditional notions of presentation and reception.”
In order for artists to be considered, they must adhere to the proposal guidelines which include:
- Clearly describing their project concept in one page or less, being sure to incldue all elements involved in the project/performance, and state why it is relevant to present at Knockdown Center;
- Giving five to 15 images of works to be included in the project or similar works, or video samples for movement-based work; and
- Describing how the project will be installed including the project’s spatial needs, technical and equipment requirements, and other considerations.

Examples of previous short-term proposals are the “Flight Over Wasteland” exhibit, the a social psychology experiment “Authority Figure,” and a speech opera presented by “Future Host.”
The submission deadline is Sept. 15. Artists interested in submitting their work for the open call can send their proposal in a single PDF to mail[@]knockdowncenter.com with the subject line “Short-Term Proposal” or “Exhibition Proposal.”
