Elected officials joined students and teachers at Flushing’s PS 201Q to help unveil the school’s new SmartLab.
Council Member Rory Lancman (D-Hillcrest), Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-Flushing) and Superintendent Danielle DiMango helped cut the ribbon for the STEAM SmartLab and Broadcast Studio, both built thanks to Lancman’s allocation of $400,000 in the Council’s 2017 budget and federal funding provided by the Magnet Schools Assistance Program.
The SmartLab is a specialized classroom where students will be able to create and develop their own projects using cutting-edge technologies, including 3D printing, software engineering and robotics and control technology, Lancman said. The Broadcast Studio will allow students to broadcast daily announcements directly into classrooms.
Lancman said the new SmartLab and Broadcast Studio will be an incredible resource for students to explore ideas, learn new concepts, and get first-hand experience using new technologies.
“Not only will this create a more dynamic learning experience in school, but it will better prepare students to excel in our interconnected and technologically-driven world,” he said. “I’m proud to help make the STEAM SmartLab and Broadcast Studio a reality at PS 201Q,and I look forward to seeing the new skills students acquire through this innovative learning environment.”
Home to 465 students, PS 201Q students go from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Students of all grades receive a STEAM education focused on inquiry-based learning. Meng said the labs will provide students with an incredible opportunity to build their STEAM skills by using new technologies and engaging with a hands-on learning environment.
“These educational resources will better prepare students for the jobs of the future, and I’m excited to see how much PS 201Q students will learn and grow.” she said.
Principal Rebecca Lozada said the new learning environment will prepare students for college and provide them with the 21st century skills the innovative technology from the SmartLab has to offer.
