An Elmhurst man died of his injuries after being struck by a car while trying to cross the street in Fresh Meadows earlier this week.

At 10:51 p.m. on Jan. 23, police responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian who was struck at the intersection of Union Turnpike and 175th Street.

Upon their arrival, police said, the officers found 71-year-old Philip O’Reilly of St. James Avenue in Elmhurst lying in the road with severe head and leg trauma.

An investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad found that a 2014 Nissan Altima, which was operated by a 47-year-old male, was traveling in the right lane of westbound Union Turnpike.

When the driver proceeded through the intersection at 175th Street, law enforcement sources said, he struck O’Reilly, who was attempting to cross Union Turnpike in the vicinity of the marked crosswalk against the pedestrian signal. The vehicle remained at the scene.

EMS responded to the scene and transported O’Reilly to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Jan. 24.

No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
