A 47-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a car on Northern Boulevard just after midnight this morning.
Carlos Gavilanes, who was just steps from his 101st Street home, was crossing Northern Boulevard from south to north between 100th Street and 101st Street when he was struck by a 2003 Honda civic at around 12:37 a.m.
The driver, a 24-year-old woman, had been traveling west in the left travel lane, police said.
It is unknown whether Gavilanes was in the crosswalk or in the middle of the road, a police spokesperson said.
Emergency responders transported Gavilanes to Elmhurst General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver remained on the scene after the crash and was uninjured. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
The accident took place exactly three weeks after 9-year-old Giovanni Ampuero was hit by a car and killed on Northern Boulevard near 70th Street.
The Department of Transportation installed leading pedestrian intervals along the road after the April 30 crash, although those are located between 58th Street and Junction Boulevard and not within the range of the crash that killed Gavilanes this morning.
The DOT has said that it intends to install other safety measures along the road, including “qwick kurb” rubber post devices, which channel traffic. These measures will also be located between 58th Street and Junction Boulevard.
