A popular Jackson Heights park was reopened under a new name yesterday Oct. 30 after receiving $1.87 million worth of renovations.
The space formerly known as Bulova Park in Jackson Height is now called the Louis C. Moser Park, in honor of the late North Queens Home Owner Civic Association founder who died of cancer in 1983. Moser was a staunch advocate of traffic safety and a proponent of parks and playgrounds in the neighborhood.
“Jackson Heights families will be able to enjoy its new amenities in a beautiful setting,” said Councilman Costa Constantinides. “This is what Louis C. Moser advocated so fiercely for, so we are now paying tribute to that labor of love.”
The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation started renovation work in September of 2017. The $1.37 million of the budget was funded by the City Council while Mayor Bill de Blasio funded the remaining $500,000. The park’s drainage and underground water supply was reconstructed; new pavement was laid to decrease trip hazards; new greenery was planted; and a new fence was built. The park is now home to two new play areas, swings, spray showers, adult fitness equipment, game tables, picnic tables and drinking fountains.
Mosers daughters Lorraine Newman Moser and Merle Payne spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony before the park’s opening along with Assemblyman Michael DenDekker, Community Board 3 District Manager Giovanna Reid.
