Thieves made off with $24,000 in stolen goods after raiding a Jewish mausoleum in Ridgewood over the weekend.
An employee of the Beth Olam Cemetery, a historic Jewish burial site located at 2 Cypress Hills St., first noticed missing mausoleum doors on Sunday, around 10:45 a.m. Further investigation revealed that a total of 14 doors and 75 air vents had been stolen from the cemetery’s mausoleums, valued at approximately $24,000.
The looting is thought to have occurred at some point between occurred sometime between 4 p.m. on Friday April 19 and when the employee noticed the missing items on April 21.
The incident is under investigation and is not being looked into as a hate crime, police said.
The cemetery, established in 1851, was initially used as a burial site for members of the three synagogues in Manhattan. Given its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
