Large Armored Truck in Ridgewood Alarms Residents

Investigators for Homeland Security

Nov. 7, 2019 By Allie Griffin

A large armored truck operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was spotted in Ridgewood Wednesday morning, spooking residents who thought it could be related to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid.

The military-style truck called a “BearCat” was captured in a photo, along with officers in Homeland Security uniforms and assault rifles, on Forest Avenue near Norman Street and was submitted to NY1.

However, the arrest was not an immigration operation, a spokesperson for Homeland Security Investigations said.

Homeland Security Investigations’ Special Response Team, similar to a local SWAT team, used the heavily-armored vehicle to make a “high risk” criminal arrest. Details of the arrest were not revealed.

The suspect was taken into custody and is currently pending prosecution in federal court.
