A 63-year-old man died Friday, two days after a 21-year-old driver blew through a stop sign and struck him as he was crossing a Ridgewood street.
Kwok Cheung, of Manhattan’s Chinatown, was crossing within the crosswalk on Gates Avenue from north to south on the west side of Onderdonk Avenue when he was hit by a 2007 BMW X5 SUV at around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, police said.
The BMW’s operator, Raymond Mersier, was traveling southbound on Onderdonk Avenue and ran through the stop sign at Gates Avenue as he turned right onto Gates Avenue. He struck Cheung, knocking him to the ground, police said.
The NYPD responded to a 911 call of the collision and found Cheung lying on the roadway with severe head trauma. EMS rushed him to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where he died on Friday.
Mersier, of Gravesend, Brooklyn, remained at the scene of the crash and was taken into police custody. He was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian/bicyclist, failure to use due care – causing serious injury–and failure to stop at a stop sign. He was also written up for two equipment violations–windshield tinting and safety glass.
