A 76-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross an East Elmhurst street on Saturday, police said.
Carolyn Egger – who was operating an electric mobility scooter at the intersection of 74th Street and 30th Avenue – was trying to cross 74th Street westbound using the crosswalk when she was struck by the driver of a 2001 Nissan SUV.
The 57-year-old driver was traveling northbound on 74th Street at around 3:30 p.m. before stopping. The driver then proceeded into the intersection by turning right onto eastbound 30th Avenue where the collision took place, according to police.
The woman was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst where she was pronounced dead.
She had lived only a short distance away from the scene on 75th Street.
Police said the driver remained at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
