A youth soccer team from Far Rockaway has bragging rights after winning City Parks Foundation’s “CityParks Soccer Battle of the Boroughs” tournament at Flushing Meadows Corona Park earlier this month.
The team representing Beach 30th Street Playground and Baisley Pond Park was crowned champion on Aug. 11 after competing against teams from across the city after participating in City Parks Foundation’s free summer soccer program for kids ages 7-12. It was the first CityParks soccer tournament since 2019.
“We were thrilled to bring back our CityParks Soccer Battle of the Boroughs, a culmination of a summer of learning this great sport for our students,” City Parks Foundation’s Director of Sports Mike Silverman said. “While there is only one tournament winner, every child benefited from the many athletic and team building skills they all received playing soccer.”
The Far Rockaway booters took home the title and medals and all participants got gift bags. Many of the kids in the Battle of the Boroughs tournament had never played on an organized soccer team prior to participating in the free summer soccer program.
