The Charles B. Wang Community Health Center is offering a free health and insurance workshop next week in Flushing.
The event, scheduled to take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the Queens Public Library branch in Flushing — located at 41-17 Main St. — aims to help local community members understand the various health insurance coverage options which are available to them and their families.
The workshop will be carried out by Health Insurance Enrollment Navigator Nancy Cai, of the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, and Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program Counselor Alex Wu, of the Department For the Aging.
Cai will be informing the community about why health insurance is important for personal health and well-being. She will be informing attendees about different types of insurance plans, as well as alternative options for accessing health care in New York state.
Flushing Council Member Sandra Ung believes that health care is not a privilege, but rather a fundamental right, and endorsed the workshop as a helpful event for the local community.
“Regardless of income, immigration status or age, we all deserve access to quality and affordable health care,” Ung said. “However, with so many options out there, finding a health care plan that meets an individual or family’s specific needs can sometimes feel like an overwhelming challenge. This workshop will help people find the right resources and ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to their health and well-being.”
She thanked the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, Queens Public Library and the Department of Aging for partnering with her to bring this vital event to the Flushing community.
Attendees can expect topics such as Medicaid, Essential Plan, Child Health Plus, Quality Health Plan enrollment and renewals to be discussed.
Wu will discuss Medicare, Medicare Advantage programs (managed care), Medicare prescription drug coverage and other health and long-term care insurance, including Medicare Open Enrollment deadlines.
Betty Cheng, the executive vice president and chief operation officer at Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, said she believes that everyone deserves access to high-quality and affordable health care.
“This free workshop will provide the community with health insurance resources as well as other critical health information that may be needed,” Cheng said. “We encourage all to join.”
The event is made easily accessible to all, with the workshop taking place in Queens Public Library in Flushing in basement rooms A and B. Additionally, the workshop will be streamed online via Zoom. No pre-registration is required to join the Zoom.
The Charles B. Wang Community Health Center is a federally qualified health center which offers primary care services to all, and they have a number of clinics across the city.
