The number of grand larceny cases across Queens continues to go down year-to-date compared to the same period in 2022, according to the latest crime stats released by the NYPD.
Grand larceny incidents are down 4.7% across northern Queens for the year through Nov. 26, dropping from 6,405 last year to 6,105 this year. In southern Queens, there has been a 3.3% decrease, from 3,389 to 3,277.
The downward trajectory of grand larceny incidents throughout Queens is also evident in the numbers over the last month. During the 28-day period ending Nov. 26, there was a 7.6% drop in grand larceny incidents in northern Queens, from 515 during the same period last year to 476 this year. There was a similar drop in southern Queens as well, with incidents there falling 7% from 287 to 267.
The most significant decreases over the 28-day period were seen within the confines of the 109th Precinct in northern Queens and the 113th Precinct in southern Queens. In the 109th Precinct, which covers Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Whitestone and Bay Terrace, the number of cases declined from 111 during that 28-day span last year to 85 this year. The 113th Precinct, which covers Hollis, South Jamaica, South Ozone Park and St. Albans, experienced a decrease from 34 to 14.
When it comes to looking at all the major crimes — murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny of vehicles — northern Queens has experienced an increase in these cases year-to-date, up 5.88% from 14,182 last year to 15,016 this year. In southern Queens, there has not been much change year-over-year, with major crimes having decreased 0.2%, from 9,953 to 9,933.
Despite the fact that major crimes have increased year-over-year in northern Queens, there has been a decline in the total amount of cases during the 28-day period. Major crimes are down 6% during this time compared to the same period last year, from 1,267 to 1,191.
Conversely, while southern Queens has experienced a slight year-over-year decline in major crimes, the numbers have gone up slightly during the 28-day period. Over the 28-day period, there has been a 1.97% increase in major crimes compared to the same period of time last year, from 811 to 827.
Year-to-date, grand larceny of automobiles has experienced the most significant growth across Queens out of all the major crimes. In northern Queens, cases are up 38.9%, from 1,758 to 2,442. Southern Queens has experienced a 14.1% increase, from 1,446 to 1,650.
This trend is also reflected when comparing the 28-day periods ending Nov. 26. In northern Queens, there has been a 9.5% increase, from 169 to 185. The most significant increase was seen in Astoria, Long Island City, Woodside and Jackson Heights, which are all within the confines of the 114th Precinct. The number of cases there rose from 21 during the 28-day period last year to 29 this year.
During the same 28-day period, the amount of grand larceny of automobile cases in southern Queens rose 15.3%, from 118 to 136. The largest increase in these incidents was seen in Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven and Ozone Park, which are all within the confines of the 102nd Precinct. The amount of incidents increased from 22 during that period of time last year to 36 this year.
