As the saying goes, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure; and the return of The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale puts that saying to the test.

The Great Woodhaven Yard Sale, hosted by the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association, anticipates having over 75 individual households offering a wide assortment of goods for sale on Saturday, June 1 and Saturday, June 8. The neighborhood-wide event lasts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a rain date set for the second scheduled Saturday.

Some participants in the Woodhaven yard sale are only selling their items on one of two Saturdays, so anyone interested in visiting the listed addresses should be aware of what days and times sellers are available. A map and list of participants in this year’s neighborhood yard sale can be found on the Great Woodhaven Yard Sale Facebook page, with a finalized version expected to be released on Friday.

Last year, the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (WRBA) celebrated its 10th anniversary of the community yard sale with a similarly large array of participants and bargain hunters.

Vance Barbour, the event coordinator of the Great Woodhaven Yard Sale, and director of the WRBA, says he is always looking for ways to improve the event every year. Through polling participants, Barbour says he changed this year’s schedule to the first two Saturdays in June to account for the better weather and an estimated higher number of buyers.

“What we found is that participants generally saw a ton of business on Saturday, and hardly any business on Sunday. So, while participants may have wanted to do more than just one day, there was no interest in extending the event to include Saturday and Sunday,” Barbour explained.

Barbour insists that the focus of the neighborhood yard sale is to bolstering a deeper sense of community for Woodhaven. Participation in the event is free and takes months of planning in advance. Neir’s Tavern, an iconic and historic bar in Woodhaven, is also sponsoring the event this year.

Although the focus is on community building, Barbour says some sellers have walked away with large sums of cash.

“I mean, we had a household last year on 76th and Atlantic Ave that sold close to $700, if not, $700 worth of stuff,” he added. ” When you talk about five and $10, here and there, that’s a lot of sales.”

Two pieces of advice for bargain hunters from the yard sale director himself, Bring lots of cash and embrace the art of haggling in a polite and respectable way.

The WRBA is comprised of Woodhaven residents who continuously help local businesses and serve the greater community through advocacy.
