Police from the 107th Precinct in Fresh Meadows are looking for a burglar who broke into a residential building in the vicinity of 70th Avenue and 141st Street in Kew Gardens Hills on Saturday, June 22.

After the intruder unlawfully gained entry to the apartment building at around 1:15 p.m., he went to the mail area of the lobby. However, the porch pirate took notice of security cameras on the wall and left empty-handed without taking any packages, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the case who added that “good security matters.”

The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect on Wednesday morning and his choice of headwear should make him easy to spot. The would-be burglar was wearing the type of fisherman’s hat that provides UV protection of the neck area designed to protect those who wear them from sunburn.

He is described as having a medium complexion, a slim build, approximately 5’11” tall, dark curly hair and a mustache. In addition to the olive green floppy hat, the perp wore a green T-shirt, dark-colored sweatpants and dark-colored sneakers. A reward of up to $3,500 is being offered for information that leads to his arrest.

Anyone with information regarding this attempted burglary is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, or on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) @NYPDTips. All calls and messages are kept confidential.

Through June 30, the 107th Precinct has reported 110 burglaries so far this year, 25 fewer than the 135 reported at the same point in 2023, according to the most recent NYPD CompStat report.
