Residents looking to tap into their creative side have an opportunity to do so, as the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) is offering free art workshops on Saturday, Aug. 31.
The workshops, part of the ongoing Jamaica Flux Workspaces and Windows exhibition, will be held at the King Manor Museum, located at 150-03 Jamaica Ave., from noon to 4 p.m.
Jamaica Flux (JFLX), a contemporary public art project, has been showcasing visual and performance art along Jamaica Avenue since July. This year’s exhibition features a variety of works, including fragments of a sneaker sculpture, video essays recounting personal experiences of living in Jamaica, Queens, and photographic references to the borough’s unique fashion scene.
Artists Noah Bassman and Olivia Brown, who are participating in JFLX, will lead the workshops. Bassman will guide participants in the “Visions For Jamaica Workshop,” where they will create original drawings inspired by the local neighborhood. Attendees will learn the fundamentals of landscape and cityscape drawing, allowing them to reimagine their surroundings through an artistic lens.
Brown’s “Plant and Paint” workshop will focus on addressing local hunger issues by encouraging at-home gardening. Participants will receive vegetable seeds, plant pots, paint supplies and aprons, along with bags to carry their creations home. Additionally, informational cards on each vegetable and links to further resources will be provided.
These workshops offer a unique opportunity for community members to engage with the arts while contributing to local initiatives. The events are free and open to the public.
