The St. Pancras Roman Catholic Church in Glendale is without power today and welcomes community support after firefighters battled a blaze on its building rooftop on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

FDNY firefighters responded to a call of a fire at around 11 p.m. at the church, located at 72-22 68th St., between Cooper Avenue and Myrtle Avenue. The FDNY sent 12 units and EMS personnel to the scene, officials shared.

No injuries were reported, and the fire was declared under control at midnight on Wednesday, Sept. 25, according to the FDNY. Fire Marshals are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Salvatore Laurenzano, a Grand Knight of the local Knights of Columbus Msgr. Sherman Council No 5103, went down to St. Pancras after hearing about the fire that same night, which he shared online and with QNS.

Upon arrival, Laurenzano and about 20 church parishioners from the Spanish mass held at St. Pancras spent over an hour pushing out any remaining water that remained after the fire was extinguished, he recalled.

“It was a special moment. People are coming together for the common good,” Laurenzano shared with QNS.

The Knights of Columbus Council No. 5103 also quickly sent a message to the general public, asking Glendale parishioners, neighbors and the surrounding communities to assist Msgr. Steven Aguggia and the staff at St. Pancras Church with any assistance they can.

The goal is to provide any additional items that will help Msgr. Aguggia through the next few days until power is restored.
