Lidl will open its newest store in Glen Oaks on Wednesday, Sept. 4, expanding its rapidly growing presence in Queens with the fourth branch in the borough in less than two years.
The new location, situated at 255-01 Union Turnpike, will officially open its doors at 8 a.m. following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The event will feature local leaders welcoming Lidl to the community and a grand opening celebration with special offers for shoppers. Line formation is expected between 6:30 and 8 a.m., where there will be free breakfast sampling.
The Glen Oaks store is part of Lidl US’ growing presence in New York, with nearby locations already serving Fresh Meadows, Elmhurst, and Astoria. This new store will create approximately 40 jobs and offer comprehensive benefits, including healthcare, to all employees regardless of their weekly hours.
The Feil Organization, a prominent real estate investment firm based in New York City, signed a 15-year lease with Lidl US in May 2023 for the 34,484-square-foot space within the Glen Oaks Shopping Center. “We’re excited to welcome Lidl into our premier retail tenant roster,” said Randall Briskin, Vice President of Leasing at the Feil Organization. “As the popular supermarket continues its sustained expansion in New York City, its diverse grocery options are set to enhance the local community while also increasing foot traffic within the shopping center.”
The Glen Oaks Shopping Center is an open-air shopping complex that spans three buildings over five city blocks in the easternmost part of Queens. The 187,650-square-foot center is currently anchored by a Burlington Coat Factory and a Rite Aid. Centrally located along Union Turnpike, the center is a key retail destination along the heavily trafficked corridor linking Queens and Long Island.
To celebrate the grand opening, the first 100 customers in line before 8 a.m. will receive a gift card valued between $5 and $100. Additionally, shoppers will have the opportunity to sample Lidl’s award-winning products and participate in special giveaways.
Lidl US will donate $1 to the Food Bank for New York City for every shopper who registers for the myLidl app and selects Glen Oaks as their store throughout the opening weekend. “Supporting the community is at the heart of what we do,” said a Lidl US spokesperson. “We’re proud to contribute to organizations that make a difference locally, like the Food Bank for New York City.”
Shoppers at the new Glen Oaks store can expect Lidl’s usual curated selection of private label products priced 40% lower on average than their national brand counterparts. The store will also feature a variety of organic, gluten-free, and specialty items, along with a fresh produce section and a bakery offering freshly baked bread and pastries.
