Man shot to death at NYCHA complex in Arverne on Thursday night, gunman remains at large: NYPD

Homicide detectives out of the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway are investigating the fatal shooting of a 59-year-old man at the Ocean Bay Apartments NYCHA complex in Arverne on the night of Thursday, Oct. 4.

Police responded to a 911 call of a person shot inside an apartment at 319 Beach 54th St., directly across the street from the Queens Public Library Arverne branch.

Officers from the 101st Precinct found the victim unconscious and unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds to the head; police said early Friday morning. EMS responded to the location and pronounced the 59-year-old victim dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased is pending family notifications.

There have been no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The fatal shooting is the third murder reported by the 101st Precinct so far in 2024 after having none at the same point last year. Through Sept. 29, the precinct had reported a dozen shooting incidents so far this year, five more than the seven reported at the same point in 2023, an increase of 71.4%, according to the most recent CompStat report.
