Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens (CCBQ) brought joy to families across the boroughs this holiday season with its annual Santa’s Toy Shop distributions, held on Dec. 12 and Dec. 19.
The event, now in its 14th year, provided toys to families in need, ensuring countless children experienced the magic of Christmas.
CCBQ is a social services organization dedicated to uplifting underserved communities through comprehensive programs addressing hunger, homelessness, immigration, and family support.
The Dec. 19 event took place at St. Gabriel Church in East Elmhurst, located at 26-26 98th St., while the Dec. 12 distribution was held at Saint Vincent Ferrer Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Both events featured volunteers dressed as “Shopper Elves,” assisting parents and caregivers in selecting age-appropriate toys for their children from an extensive selection of gifts.
“For many children, this is the only gift that will be under their tree this year,” said Debbie Hampson, Senior Director of Community Outreach Services at CCBQ. “We’ve had parents crying with gratitude for the opportunity to provide even one gift for their child.”
The annual initiative has grown in response to increasing community needs. Appointment slots for toy pick-ups filled quickly, but the organization welcomed numerous walk-ins as well. The events drew support from parishioners, community members, and local businesses, including volunteers like Brian Zilm from TD Bank.
“Giving back to the community and seeing how happy people are—it really makes you feel valued,” said Zilm. “Myself, my family, my company, we love to give back, and that’s what we’re doing here today.”
The toy shop distribution highlights the ongoing commitment of Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens to serving those in need, particularly during the holiday season. For more information about upcoming initiatives, visit ccbq.org.
