St. Kevin Catholic Academy in Flushing takes a page from Macy’s with its own balloon-filled parade held on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
The “Balloons Over St. Kevin’s” event took place outside the school on 195th Street, featuring handmade balloons crafted by students as part of a school-wide learning experience.
St. Kevin Catholic Academy has long been a pillar of academic excellence and community involvement. Serving students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, the school fosters a nurturing environment where faith, education, and creativity come together. The students at St. Kevin’s are encouraged to explore new ideas and engage in hands-on projects, such as the “Balloons Over St. Kevin’s” parade, which showcases their imagination and school spirit.
The parade is a creative extension of the book Balloons Over Broadway, which recounts the inspiring true story of the puppeteer behind the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The school’s curriculum has tied into the book to enhance students’ academic experience, blending literature with hands-on creativity.
“We decided to have our own parade. The students made their own unique balloons using any items they find around the house—from boxes to balloons, paper plates, and more,” said Christina Giammarinaro, a first-grade teacher at St. Kevin Catholic Academy.
The event brings together the school’s entire community as the students proudly showcase their handmade creations in celebration of the holiday season. The “Balloons Over St. Kevin’s” parade offers a festive, educational experience that connects the spirit of the Macy’s Parade with local tradition in Queens.
