Residents in Northeast Queens have an opportunity to show their appreciation for veterans by participating in the annual “Valentine’s for Vets” gift drive, organized by Assembly Member Edward C. Braunstein.
The initiative invites community members to donate essential items such as new clothing, toiletries, and Valentine’s treats, including candy and greeting cards. The donations will be distributed to hospitalized and disabled veterans at the St. Albans VA Community Living Center and the New York State Veterans Home, both located in St. Albans.

“[The gift drive] is a long-standing Northeast Queens tradition that shows local veterans our gratitude in the spirit of Valentine’s Day,” said Assemblyman Braunstein.
Braunstein has represented New York’s 26th Assembly District in Northeast Queens since 2011, advocating for veterans, seniors, and working families. His district includes Bayside, Little Neck, Douglaston, Whitestone, and parts of Auburndale and Flushing, where he has championed initiatives supporting education, public safety, and small businesses. Braunstein has been a strong proponent of veterans’ services, regularly organizing donation drives and community events to honor those who have served.
“I’m proud to announce the annual return of the ‘Valentines for Vets’ gift drive,” Braunstein said. “My office will be collecting Valentine’s cards, new clothing items, toiletries, candy, playing cards, and large-piece puzzles. I thank you in advance for your generosity.”
The “Valentine’s for Vets” initiative dates back to 1989, when advice columnist Ann Landers encouraged readers to send Valentine’s cards to veterans in care facilities as a gesture of appreciation. Since then, the tradition has been embraced by veteran organizations and local communities across the country. In Bayside, it has become an annual event, allowing residents to give back to those who have served.
Residents interested in participating can drop off donations at Braunstein’s office, located at 213-33 39th Ave., Suite 238, in Bayside, until February 6. Suggested donations include aftershave, body wash, sweatpants, t-shirts, socks, pajamas, playing cards, jumbo puzzles, and sugar-free candy.
