Teens and tweens can spend MLK Jr. day doing an act of service with the Eastern Queens Alliance.
The civic organization is hosting an MLK Jr. Day of Service Day in partnership with the NYC Parks Department on Monday, Jan. 20. The service event is eligible for school service credits.
From 10 a.m. to noon, volunteers will help maintain the Idlewild Park Preseve’s Idlewild Trail. Interested volunteers should wear sturdy boots or shoes, long sleeves, and comfortable, warm clothing that can get dirty. Interested volunteers will meet at the Idlewild Environmental Science Center at 222-02 149th Ave. and Springfield Lane in Springfield Gardens.
The Eastern Queens Alliance is a coalition of local civic organizations that advocates for a better quality of life for residents.
Located northeast of JFK Airport, Idlewild Park boasts 160 acres of freshwater and tidal wetlands, woodland, meadows, and grassland dune-scrub habitats.
The park contains two meandering tributaries of Hook Creek, which feeds into Jamaica Bay.
The surrounding marshland is maintained to protect colonial wading birds, which breed on rookery islands. It is also a habitat for foraging egrets, ibis, and herons.
