Patricks Pub & Caf has served the Little Neck community for nearly 40 years, and, as with every story, it has come to its final chapter.
The family-operated business with a rich history has run into financial problems recently and has announced a closing date of Sept. 3. Local residents saddened by the demise of their beloved caf, will at least be pleased to hear that the Claddagh Shop adjacent to the Pub will remain open.
"No matter how good you are, the bad economy and natural changes around you cause times to get tough," said Frank Mackler, the owner of Patricks.
Rising taxes, increases in utilities, insurance, food costs and other expenses have made it difficult for Patricks. Beef and chicken prices have risen by 30% (in part due to Mad Cow disease scares), which has made it difficult for the pub to survive. And, according to Mackler, the indoor smoking ban has caused a drop in regular customers.
"I thought we would never leave," said Mackler. "Theres no longer a level playing field in this kind of business anymore. It hurts to disappoint our customers."
Macklers daughter Patricia runs the adjacent Claddagh gift shop, which has been warmly regarded in the community as a reputable business with quality products since its opening. The hardships Patricks has endured have not been exclusive, and the gift shop has been forced to downsize.
Patricia said that Patricks would be moving to a new site soon, and that it would be within a five-mile perimeter of where they are now in order to "capitalize on their local fame."
