With time winding down in the fourth quarter, the No. 11-ranked LaGuardia Community College (LAGCC) Lady Red Hawks found themselves trailing the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) Panthers, 61-62.

Still holding on to their slim lead, the Panthers inbounded the ball, which led to a jump ball. The Lady Red Hawks won the jump ball, giving them hope to complete the comeback.

On the final play of the game, Briana Johnson drove down the court and passed to Sarah Edwards who hit a layup, giving LAGCC a 63-62 lead. Edwards was fouled on the play and sank the ensuing free throw to give the Lady Red Hawks the 64-62 victory.

Johnson scored a game-high 26 points on 50 percent shooting for LAGCC. She also tied a school record for three-pointers in a single game with four, as she went 4-of-7 from three-point range. Edwards also had a double-double, scoring 15 points and recording 10 rebounds.

The win improves LAGCC’s record to 8-2 overall, 7-1 in the region and 5-0 in the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC), while BMCC falls to 3-4 overall and in the region and 2-2 in CUNYAC.

The Lady Red Hawks will face off against Bunker Hill at home in a game at noon on Saturday, Dec. 19. Last season, the Lady Red Hawks lost to Bunker Hill by a score of 64-50.
