By Jyoti Thottam

An off-duty police officer died Tuesday night in Glendale, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Robert Hoffman, a nine-year veteran of the Police Department, was in his home at 76-17 69th Place at about 9:56 p.m. Tuesday and apparently shot himself with his service revolver, said Officer Dennis Cirillo, a police spokesman.

Hoffman, 35, was separated from his wife, who lives upstate with their daughter, according to a police source. He was talking to his wife on the phone when she heard a shot go off, the source said.
