President-Elect Bush had this to say about the former Jamaica resident: "Elaine Chao believes deeply in the American dream because she has lived it."
Chao, wife of Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, said she believes in self-reliance as the essential engine of success. She will face a Senate hearing on her confirmation next week.
The labor nominee, 47, is an expert on philanthropy at the Heritage Foundation, the conservative research institute, where she is widely sought after as a public speaker, fund-raiser and board member.
Chao has held an array of impressive positions. Her nomination is expected to win the support of the Senate. Chao is the second Queens resident to serve as U.S. Secretary of Labor. President Richard Nixon appointed Peter Brennan as Secretary of labor in the 1970s.
