An off-duty New York City police officer stationed in the 105th Precinct was arrested Friday night in Oceanside, L.I., after hitting two cars and leaving the scene of the accidents, Nassau police said.
Officer John Guglielmo, 36, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated, police said in a statement.
Guglielmo allegedly rear-ended a car at a stop sign at Foxhurst Road in Oceanside and continued on his way without identifying himself, police said.
Shortly after the first crash, Guglielmo allegedly ran into a second car at Locust Street and Dunkin Place as the driver was backing out of her driveway, police said.
The NYPD officer was arrested by Nassau County police near the second accident at 11:40 p.m. Friday.
Guglielmo, of Oceanside, was stationed in the 105th Precinct, which stretches from Queens Village to Glen Oaks and from Floral Park to Laurelton. The precinct also covers Cambria Heights, Rosedale, Bellerose and Brookville.
He was suspended by the New York City Police Department, which is standard procedure after an officer is arrested, NYPD officials said.
Guglielmo was arraigned Saturday on charges of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident. He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to be back in court June 14, said the Nassau district attorney. If convicted, he could face up to one year in jail for the DWI charge and 90 days for leaving the scene of the accident.
Police said the 18-year-old driver of the first car, whose name was not released, was taken to South Nassau Community Hospital with complaints of neck and back pain after reporting the accident to the police.
There was no further information on the injured driver.
The driver of the second car, whose name also was not released, was not hurt and did not want to press additional charges against Guglielmo, police said.
