The Catholic High School Athletic Association will hold its annual Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan girls’ varsity basketball playoffs this week, with regular season winner and top seed Christ the King receiving a bye in the first round, slated for Wednesday, Feb. 27.
The first round, which featured No 2. St. Francis Prep against No. 7 Bishop Ford, No. 3 Bishop Kearney against No. 3 Bishop Loughlin and No. 4 The Mary Louis Academy against No. 5 Archbishop Molloy, would end the season for the losers, but propelled the winners into the second round, scheduled for Sunday at St. Francis College in Brooklyn. Christ the King would face the winner of Mary-Louis and the Prep-Ford winner takes on the victor in Kearney-Loughlin.
The finals will be played Saturday, March 9, also at St. Francis College.
The Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan playoff ultimately selects which teams will represent the league in the annual Catholic High School Athletic Association state playoffs.
The CHSAA Class ‘A’ state championship is already set between Christ the King and St. Peter’s and will be played March 17 at St. John’s University. The winners of that match, regardless of what happens in the city playoffs, will represent the CHSAA in the State Federation Tournament to be held at Glens Falls March 22 and 23.
The ‘B’ state representative from Brooklyn/Queens is also set, as St. Francis Prep will await the winner of the Bronx/Manhattan/Staten Island tournament, featuring ‘B’ schools Monsignor Scanlon, St. John’s Villa, Notre Dame and Maria Regina (Westchester).
The winner of the Mary Louis-Molloy game is virtually guaranteed to be the ‘D’ division representative. The CHSAA semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday, March 13, with the finals on March 17. also at St. John’s.
