The Salt Lake City Olympics continued to hold my attention each night until the glorious bevy of fireworks and the recipients of gold, silver and bronze medals paraded out in all their glory. Congratulations to each and every one of you on a job well done.
Snowball, a white, male Pomeranian dog, is still missing. He ran out of his yard with no collar after having a bath. His owners are anxious for his return. Please call 539-6651 if you have seen Snowball.
Boy Scout William Hom of Troop 20 held a blood drive on Feb. 17 at First Reformed Church as his Eagle Scout project and I am happy to report that he collected 57 pints of blood. Congratulations on a job well done.
Congratulations to Ray Wick on becoming a captain in the Fire Department.

At Whitestone Lanes Helen Mazzarelo bowled 201. She must be taking lessons from Fred.
Would you believe that 40 years have gone by since the orbital flight of the Mercury? John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra and Gordon Cooper paid tribute to their Mercury colleagues Alan Shepard, Virgil Grissom and Deke Slayton.
Condolences to the family of Chuck Jones, whose animated characters won him three Academy Awards and delighted generations of cartoon fans. He was 89 when he died last month. Some of his famous characters were Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote. He also produced, directed and wrote the screenplay for the animated TV classic “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” He will be truly missed but his work will live on for all the coming generations.
March 10 will be Girl Scout Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. at First Reformed Church in College Point.
The Silver Award Girls who belong to the Service Unit North Queens 3, Troop 4089, will be honored Saturday, March 23, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Church on the Hill’s lower auditorium, 167-07 35th Ave., Flushing (near 168th Street). The following Cadettes will be honored for their achievements: Amy Blauner, Carla Hung, Samantha Kerath, Sara Lizzul, Andrea Marsala, Gabrielle Nussbaum, Linda Saur and Lauren Schneiderman. The program will include guest speakers, entertainment by the Girl Scout troops and the presentation of the Silver Awards. Refreshments will follow. Reservations should be made by March 8 with Pat Lizzul at 939-9143.
Many meetings are being conducted regarding major school reform. Get involved. Whether you have children in school or if you would like the school system to be run properly so that all the children will benefit and reach their highest scholastic ability, get involved!
Steven Sanders, chairman of the Assembly Education Committee, and lawmakers are looking to give the mayor more control over the Board of Education beginning in September.
The Association for the Advancement of Blind and Retarded, Inc. will be sponsoring its annual dinner-dance April 12 at Terrace on the Park in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The association will have a journal on and the deadline is March 15. SABINA SAYS — Congratulations to my nephew, West Islip’s Andrew Weinstein. After reading about Afghanistan children being hungry, the third-grader wanted to help. He showed The Weekly Reader article to his teacher, Karen Busch, at Manetuk Elementary School and asked if a bake sale could be organized. Assisted by his classmates, a variety of tasty treats were offered to the student body. “We raised a lot of money,” said an exuberant Andrew, “and we’ll be able to make the Afghanistan children happy.”
Ms. Busch said it was completely Andrew’s idea and she was touched by the request. A check is being sent to the American Fund for Afghanistan Children, as per the request of President George W. Bush.
