Major Division
Mardene Construction 5, Biordi Construction 4. In the battle of construction companies, Mardene prevailed over Biordi, 5-4, as Mardene’s Billy Demos drove in two runs in the top of the sixth inning for the win.
The pitching of John Apostolo (five strikeouts, one run allowed on one hit) and Joey Marden (eight strikeouts) combined for the victory. Sean Escobedo hit a home run and went 2-for-2 in leading the offensive attack for Mardene, along with Brian Timmermans (1-for-3), Marden (1-for-3, double) and Vinny Iannece (1-for-2), who stole home for what proved to be a key run in the ball game.
Biordi Construction was led by Dylan Pleva (2-for-2, one RBI), Spiros Cominos (1-for-3, double and one RBI), Jonathan Costa (2-for-3, one RBI) and the fine pitching of Joey Soares (five strikeouts, two runs on two hits).
The game was close throughout tied at 2-2 until the top of the sixth inning when Mardene scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Highlights in the inning included Escobedo’s home run and two doubles by Demos and Marden.
But Biordi refused to go quietly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame on RBI doubles by Cominos and Costa. With the tying run just 60 feet away and one out, Marden struck out the final two Biordi batters to earn the win.
Brigandi Barristers 15, Biordi Construction 10. Biordi’s Matt Valle had two hits, one of them a two-run home-run over the center field fence in the fifth inning to seemingly cap off a victory, but Brigandi was not to be denied.
In the top of the sixth, Brigandi drew six walks and Anthony Zupnick doubled to power the Barristers over Biordi. Brigandi’s John Conway had the batter’s eye, picking up four walks and scoring two runs.
Pitcher Chris Paruch shut the door on the threatening Biordi offense in the bottom of the sixth. But it was Brigandi’s centerfielder, Giancarlo Santillo, who threw a strike to catcher Zupnick to catch a runner trying to score.
Party City 2, Mardene Construction 0. Party City’s Cal Sternick went the distant on the mound shutting out Mardene’s potent offense. Teammate Sam Koenig provided the only offense, driving in his team’s two runs.
Bell Bay Florist 8, Valle Tile 7. Marc Buccellato hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run blast in the fifth inning to spur another come-from-behind, extra-inning victory for the Florists. Mike Wiederhold went 3-for-4 with a double, Tommy Pierce went 2-for-4 and Joey Kurz made two put outs in right field for the Bell Bay Florists. For Valle Tile, it was Alon Nisim’s triple and run scored in the seventh inning that applied the pressure on the Florists.
Valle Tile 5, V.I. Pizza 3. Valle Tile was able hold off a rally by V.I. Pizza late in the game to secure the win.
Brigandi Barristers 6, Printing Express 3. Glenn Barker went strong for three innings on the mound for the Barristers and teammates Chris Paruch and Anthony Zupnick added two and one, respectively, to round out the pitching duties. The Barristers’ James Lizul went 2-for-3, and Paul Giacomino hit the ball hard, as teammate Derek LaMacchia added a 2-for-3 day, including a double and RBI.
PeeWee Division
Prava Construction vs. Padavan’s Paragons. Prava Construction came out swinging with Steven Nacinovich leading the way. Padavan’s had a fine team effort with every player chipping in.
Mensch Lumber vs. Prava Construction. Charlie Solomon flashed some fine leather at first base, while teammate Matthew Erlich starred on the mound. Every player on Prava Construction contributed.
Mensch Lumber vs. Il Fresco. Fresco was dazzling in the field and at the plate, with every player contributing to this fine team effort. Sluggers Jared Milano and Dan Widawski led the was and congratulations to Jack Weston, who gets better with every game.
Hollis Court Collision vs. Anna Marie’s Bagels. Joe Decanio broke out of a slump with a high fly ball for Anna Marie’s. Every player on Hollis Court Collision had a hit and the entire team played a great defensive game.
Minor Division
Starlight outreaches the long arm of Fader Law. Led by the pitching of Liam Donahue, Starlight Caterers coasted to their sixth straight win with an 8-4 decision over Fader Law. Nick DelGaudio busted the game open with a two-run double when the game was still in doubt. John Wynne made an unassisted double play with the bases loaded and also made another heads up play in the last inning to snuff out a Fader rally. Fader was led by the bat of Greg Sullivan, who drove in all four Fader runs with two doubles. Nick Varzi, pitching for the first time this season, kept Fader in the game with outstanding control.
