The 11-year-old Bayside Travel all-Stars won the 19th annual Nick Lomangino Memorial Tournament, hosted by the Hollis-Bellaire-Queens Village-Bellerose Athletic Association at the Prellar Baseball Complex on Aug. 25.
The Bayside team, coached by John Smith, defeated the host HBQVB team, 10-2 in the title game behind the hitting of shortstop John Apostolo, who drove in seven runs, including two three-run home runs and an RBI-single.
The tournament win was the end to a successful summer for the 11-year-olds, who also played in the annual District 26 Gorman Memorial Tournament where they finished with a 10-4 record.
Competing against mostly 12-year-old teams, tablesetters Nick Copelli, Kevin Smith and Jorge Ynoa did a fine job getting on base ahead of the bog bats of Apostolo, Derek Lamacchia, Rob Renzi and Joey Marden.
The well-balanced team was also paced by the super play of Steve Kinnaly, Andrew Haverlin and Mike McManus.
Without a doubt the strength of this year’s team was its deep pitching staff. With staff aces Marden and Ynoa pitching limited innings due to injury, Matthew Valle, Sean Donelly, mike keen and Cal Sternick were outstanding in leading their team to an overall 18-4 record.
