To The Point: Poppy queen selected for College Pt. parade

By Sabina Cardali

Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. The grass is now green, the flowers are blossoming from their buds and yet the weather is still in an uncertain condition.

Congratulations to Greta Hruska, who bowled 201, and to Cathy Tuttle, who bowled 212, at Whitestone Lanes.

Congratulations to Ray Schnel, who passed his driver’s test.

Speedy recovery to Mary Weber.

Happy birthday to Linda Branca.

Dorphina and Robert Cascarino welcomed a new son.

On Sunday, May 25, at 2 p.m. the College Point Memorial Day Parade with start. If you aren’t in the parade, it is important that you, your family and friends observe it.

It is important that we honor all our armed forces who are defending our country and our people.

Our poppy queen has been selected and her name is Lia Estrada. She is 10 years old and attends 5th Avenue Elementary School. Her brother Jonathan is going to Juliard.

Lia participated in the Kohl program “Kids Who Care,” plays softball in her town and participated in the Pioneer Girl to aid underprivileged children with donations and prayers. Hair is donated to Locks of Love to make hairpieces for children with cancer.

The grand marshal is represented by Penny Herrell, whose late father, Everett, was honored with the naming of VFW Post 885 after him. He died a few months ago.

Boy Scout Troop 20 will be having three upcoming events from the First Reformed Church. The first is a fund-raiser car wash at the Greenpoint Bank parking lot at 14th Avenue and 123rd Street on Sunday, June 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The second is a fund-raiser pasta dinner at the First Reformed Church’s yard, weather permitting. Otherwise it will be in the chapel on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets are by pre-sale only. How to get the tickets will be announced.

And there will be community service at the First Reformed Church, in yard, rain or shine. Annual Veterans’ Day Weekend Flag Retirement Ceremony will be Saturday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m., hosted by the First Reformed Church Boy Scout Troop 20 with St. Fidelis Boy Scouts Troop 18. This year will be a Friday-to-Sunday campout sleepover.
