On Sunday, July 20, at 6 p.m. there will be a free concert at MacNeil Park with Morning Star, authentic Irish music. On Saturday, July 26, 1-3 Garden Tea with Mrs. Poppenhusen and New historic College Point Slide Presentation Then and Now. Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance.
On Sunday, July 27, at 6 p.m. there will be a free concert at MacNeil Park. The Something Special Orchestra will perform the ever-popular sounds of the big bands.
College Point had a town fair. There were many rides for the children and a great deal of good food.
Strut Your Stuff had its annual recital at its Queensboro School. A five-week summer session will begin for ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, acrobatics, musical theater, combination dance, gym stuff, kid stuff and more.
The landmark Poppenhusen Institute had a memorable program on the 140th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. It began with a concert of the American Brass Band Quartet performing Civil War music and was followed by a lecture from Professor Gordon Shay, Department of History; St. John Fisher College of Rochester; and Jim Haas, former College Point resident and author of “College Point and the Civil War.”
Voelker Orth Museum opened in Flushing. Running the day-to-day operation is Catherine Abrams. The 1890s home is at 140-19 38th Ave. The purpose is to promote history, birds and nature. For information, call 718-359-6227.
A safe driver’s course will be Saturday, July 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This class will allow you to save 10 percent annually for three years on collision and liability insurance premiums. It will also reduce up to four points of accumulated moving violations. The cost is $45. Register by calling the St. Fidelis rectory at 718-445-6164.
The Holy Family School in Flushing is looking for graduates to join in the celebration of its 50th anniversary.
