100 youths involved in melee outside Bayside High School

By Ayala Ben-Yehuda

A confrontation involving about 100 youths broke out Friday afternoon across the street from Bayside High School, a city Department of Education spokesman said.

The reasons behind the 3 p.m. fight were unclear, but the ruckus left one student with a black eye, Department of Education spokesman Paul Rose said. No arrests were made.

Police and the school were investigating why the fight erupted in O’Connor Park across from the high school, Rose said.

“Steps have been taken to increase security surrounding the school,” he said.

111th Precinct Community Affairs Officer Gary Poggiali said a planned fight between two people after school did not go off as intended, but others entered the fray in a dispute over a skateboard.

“Some of the students were not Bayside High School students,” said PTA President Andrew Green, who reported an orderly dismissal Monday afternoon. “We were very happy to see the added police presence.”
