Police Officer Ivy Dror of the 110th Precinct answered the prayers of expectant mother Diana Gomez as she helped to deliver her baby safely in the rear of a Queens medallion taxi cab on Christmas Eve.
The police arrived at two different locations in response to two 911 distress calls. The taxi got lost en route to Elmhurst City Hospital and ended up on the corner of Dongan Avenue and Broadway where police arrived.
Gomez, 22, was in the final stages of labor in the back of the cab. Her baby was born over a month premature and the umbilical cord had wrapped around her leg creating a dangerous situation for mother and daughter. Without medical help, Gomezs baby could have died or suffered severe medical complications.
Dror, on patrol, arrived after the baby had already come out. She is a trained emergency technician and after notifying emergency medical services of their exact location, she began performing a procedure to free the baby of the umbilical cord that was threatening the babys young life. Dror cut another officers shoe lace in half, tied the cord in two places and separated the newborn safely from the cord.
Gomez and her new baby girl were admitted to Elmhurst City Hospital in stable condition where they remained for treatment before being released earlier this week.
