To the Editor:
Remember how proud NYC Council Finance Committee Chairperson David Weprin was as part of the NYC budget negotiations, this past June? He claimed to obtain several million dollars, which would be used to open libraries on weekends, all around town. Last time I looked, the Little Neck Public Library along with many other libraries in Queens and other boroughs are still closed each and every Saturday.
Perhaps Councilmember Weprin spent too much time in his losing efforts running around town campaigning for former Speaker Gifford Miller prior to the September Democratic Mayoral Primary, former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer in the November General election for Mayor and all year long to become the next NYC Council Speaker to follow up on his promises.
But then again, like any other career politician — he will say anything, do anything and promise anything to get ahead. Thanks to Councilmember Weprin, there was no Christmas or Hanukkah for thousands of children and adults in Little Neck and other neighborhoods who would love to use their local public library on Saturday or Sunday. For those of us who love public libraries, he is the grinch who stole both Christmas and Hanukkah.
If Councilmember Weprin can’t keep track of how several million dollars are spent for longer library hours, how would he ever be up to the task of helping manage a $50 billion municipal budget?
