Right To Bear Arms

To the Editor:
I am writing to urge people in New York that our right to bear arms is essential to keep civilians safe from violent criminals. The last thing a criminal wants to be faced with during a robbery is when their would-be victim is armed. When citizens are armed, criminals are aware that this puts their lives into jeopardy.
There has been no evidence proving that gun control has ever produced lower crime rates as criminals don’t care whether or not they are breaking the law by possessing an illegal firearm. We the people have to be able to police ourselves as there can never be enough police to stop every violent crime that occurs.
Other communities that withdrew their gun control laws resulted in a sharp decline in crime overall. Mayor Bloomberg, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly’s idea to ban guns in New York City only makes us less safe and more vulnerable to victimization.
Let us remember too what the Nazis did first when they came to power; you guessed it, they confiscated arms. Haven’t we learned anything since then?
