Assembly candidate Grace Meng took another step in her push for public office Monday, opening the Friends of Grace Meng New York State Assembly Campaign Office. Meng, who announced her campaign in the 22nd district shortly after her father, Jimmy, decided not to run for reelection because of health issues, was joined by members of the community, volunteers and much of her staff.
“I just wanted to let the public know that the office is there and available to them,” she said. “In the next few weeks, I’ll be going around talking to voters, just to try to get my message across of what I’ve done and hopefully what I plan to do for Flushing.”
Meng, 31, plans to make a point of her vast experience in the community, which includes being the Chairperson of the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development Neighborhood Advisory Board #7, Board Member of the Flushing YMCA, the American Red Cross and the N.A.A.C.P. Northeast Queens, the Asian American Bar Association of New York, and much more. She is also the only candidate that has worked on a campaign for the New York State Assembly (she ran her father, Jimmy’s, campaign). Additionally, Meng, a graduate of Yeshiva University and Cardozo School of Law in Manhattan, has experience as an attorney.
“I look forward to building on my public and community service, using my training as an attorney and my legislative experience to make a difference for Flushing,” Meng said. “It is with the same commitment to community that I started F.O.C.U.S., a volunteer group. As Flushing’s Assembly Member, I will continue my work as an activist and bridge builder and use those efforts at community empowerment to infuse my work for Flushing.”
“This is a person who has a quality record as a community activist; she serves on [many] boards in the community,” added Corey Bearak, Esq., a senior advisor on Meng’s campaign. “She’s been able to build bridges within the community. … Flushing being such a diverse town, that can only help.”
